Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Haier HLP21E 6.6-Pound Pulsator Wash with Stainless Steel Tub

Customer Review: Great mini washer for apartment
Summary: 5 Stars

I read a lot of reviews from different sites about this product. There are some reviews saying it is hard to install so I didn't make my decision until this July. I got this machine from Amazon a few days ago. I read the instruction carefully before installed. The instruction and the product indicated how to place the plate correctly onto the bottom. This machine is perfect for 2 persons. The clothes dry easily because the spin is strong enough. The machine is not very noisy, and understand it should have some kind of sound when it washes or spin. I used the box which came with this machine to cover it because I don't want my apartment manager knows, and it help a little bit on the sound.
I lived at the 3rd floor and my apartment doesn't have laundry. It saved my life a lot.
At the beginning, I thought that it would deliver by UPS but it was not. I tracked the package everyday to make sure I have someone standby to receive the package because it is a heavy case, over 60 lbs., I didn't want it returned. When I tracked the package was arrived the city, the shipping company will call or email you to contact them to arrange the delivery, I was so happy with it.

(Sept. 12, 2010) After 2 years, everything works fine. Very important, don't put too much clothes in one load, after a few try, I know how to balance for every load. This mini washer machine is perfect to let me separate the colors of the clothes and my daughter's clothes in different loads. I can wash and do something else at the same time, and no more wait at the laundry anymore. I love it.

Customer Review: Great product for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using the HLP21E for the last month and it's been working great. You just need to make sure that you don't overload the machine. I recommend it for anyone looking for an easy alternative lightweight machine.

Customer Review: Great product, poor documentation
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this washer a little more than a year ago, and once I got the bottom plate on correctly (which is not easy to tell from the documentation), it's been great. Several others have mentioned this, but you want to put the metal plate thing on so it bulges out, rather than in. If you put it on bulging in, you will hear TERRIBLE noises when you try to do laundry. With it in the right position, it is actually quite quiet.

I've had a few spills, but not due to anything the washer did--my sink was actually clogged or partially clogged and overflowed. This was not the fault of the washer in the slightest. I've never had any overfilling issues with the water on the high setting, and as long as I don't overload it, I don't have a lot of unbalancing issues.

Keep in mind that a pair of jeans is 2-3 lbs, a t-shirt is about 1 lb and that the capacity is only 6.6 lbs and you shouldn't have many problems with overbalancing. :)

Customer Review: Great washer, almost perfect!
Summary: 5 Stars

I live in an apartment without a washer/dryer hookup, so my friend suggested I get this as an alternative to the laundromat or the apartment laundry room (which is a LONG walk and only has 4 washers and dryers for an entire apartment complex). I got this washer a few days ago from a site/big box retailer (the one everyone loves to hate) that offered free shipping from the site to the store and boy has it been a lifesaver for me!

Here's a step-by-step of how it works:

1. You attach the black hose to the water faucet (very simple to do--it has a snap on/off attachment that's wonderful!) and turn on the water. This hose will provide the machine with water. You leave the water faucet running throughout the cycle--the machine will stop the water flow when the water level you've chosen (low, medium, or high) is reached. How this works I don't know, but the water faucet remains on, but no water comes through unless the machine requests it. My faucet is pretty old so it drips a bit when it's on and the machine isn't receiving water, so I keep the faucet pretty low, making it take longer for the machine to fill up. The stronger you turn the faucet, the faster it will fill up (obviously). If you want hot water, use the hot faucet (again, obviously). The machine will fill twice during the cycle, once at the beginning to wash and later when it rinses the clothes.
2. Attach the gray hose to the sink. This hose will drain the water out. Note that this this hose will not reach as far as the black hose, so you may need to extend it unless you want to roll your machine in front of a sink each time you use it, or unless it's directly next to a sink. My water intake hose was long enough to reach the sink but the gray drain hose wasn't, so I simply cut about two feet from a garden hose and attached it to the end of my cord with duct tape to extend it.
3. After the hoses are attached, select the cycle you want. You can choose between heavy wash and quick wash. You can choose to skip the wash altogether and go to rinse/spin or just spin. You simply click the "cycle" button until the cycle you want lights up--very simple. You also choose your water level. Note that "Low" is very low, so you will probably use medium or high unless you're washing a single item.
4. After you choose your desired cycle and click "Start," the machine will begin to fill with water. Throw your soap and clothes in and close the lid. Once the machine reaches its water level, the water will shut off and it will begin the cycle.
5. After the wash is completed, the unit will flush out all the water through the gray tube. It will then fill up with water again, rinse, then flush out the water once again. It will then spin dry three or four times before finishing.
6. Once its finished, it will make beeping noises for a few seconds (to alert you that it's done) and shut off. That's it--you're ready to dry!

Pros:

--Quick wash option is, well, quick! About 10-15 minutes for the quick wash.
--Easy to operate, even with multiple wash/rinse options.
--Fits a large amount of clothing. Other reviewers said it only fits a towel and a few pieces of clothes, but I've been able to fit 3 or 4 bath towels and a change of clothing into a single load without any problem whatsoever. This thing is definitely roomy inside.
--Has wheels so you can roll the unit around easily, even though it's pretty lightweight. You can lock these wheels (as I do) so the unit doesn't jostle around while washing.
--The electric control panel is idiot-proof and located right on the top of the machine.
--It looks sleek, not a cheapo fake washing machine. And it's very compact. About as large as a stand-up garbage can. Lightweight and has rollers, and the top lid is clear blue plastic so you can see through to your clothes as they wash.
--Very quiet. You can hardly hear it, and it's only noticeable when it's spinning the clothes dry.

Cons:

--May not be the most powerful washing motion. It pushes the suds around a bit, so it may not be great for someone who gets their clothes REALLY dirty.
--The hoses aren't super long, and the water intake hose (black) reaches farther than the gray flush hose.
--The black water hose connection on the top of the unit leaks unless you tighten it very, very strongly with a wrench. Tightening it with your hand will not suffice. After the first few loads the back of my machine was soaked, and water was dripping from this valve. I have since tightened it and it's dry as a bone.

One miscellaneous suggestion: If you need a compact washer and dryer, buy a spin dryer! Compact dryers are not the best or most effective machines ever produced (which is understandable given the power restrictions), and you will wait all day for clothes to dry if you don't buy a spin dryer. You can find a fantastic spin dryer online for about $100, and it's WELL worth it. They get an astonishing amount of water out and cuts drying time by about 80%. In fact, I don't even dry my towels in the dryer anymore. I simply toss them into the spin dryer, watch about half a gallon of water pour out (not exaggerating) and then throw them onto the shower door to dry. With a spin dryer, you may not even need a dryer for your clothes if you have a clothesline, though I still use a dryer just because I like my clothes toasty warm :)

Anyways, this washer is a dream! I hate, hate, hate the laundry room scene, and along with the Haier compact dryer, I'm saved from it. Washing is simple again, and can be done in the comfort of my own home. I love this unit, even though I wish the cords were longer. Great buy!

Customer Review: Great washer, but beware of reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the Haier HLP21E now for about five months, washing six to eight loads a week. So far, so good. I also bought the caster set that Haier sells, so I don't have to break my back lugging it back and forth to the sink every day. The caster set is worth the money, but keep in mind that some of the stores are charging double what Haier charges. The cost should be about $25.

It's not a quiet machine. It's not horribly loud, but it's certainly not quiet. I think most people who claim it is are simply going into another room and turning up the TV. If you have an apartment with tissue paper walls and fear the landlord might hear the noise, get a solid lie ready. This is actually quite fun. I find it very easy to hide this washer under a table cloth or even in my closet!

The inner wash tub is only about one cubic foot, so you will have to do about three loads for every single load you would for a standard size washer.

This brings me to an issue that is important for potential buyers. Over the months, I've seen people making wild claims about the amount of clothes they can put in this washer. Please be aware that some are full of beans. You are NOT going to be able to stuff five pairs of adult denim jeans in this, or king-size sheets and pillow cases, or eight bath towels. Either people are confusing this model with another larger Haier, or they are people who like to wear their own body soil repeatedly, or they are lying. Use some common sense. Firstly, there is not the physical room for the enormous amounts of clothes that are often being claimed. Secondly, if you stuff the machine full to the top, the soil will not completely rinse out, but will merely redeposit over larger areas. This is disgusting. Out-of-sight should not be out-of-mind when doing laundry.

You should never fill any washer more than half to two-thirds full of dry clothes, so don't do it with this washer.

Because there is no agitating spindle in this washer, heavy pieces of clothes might move to one side of the tub as it empties of water, in preparation for a spin. If it goes off-balance, a fuzzy-logic will kick in and the tub will stop and refill with water in an attempt to rebalance the clothes. This can happen easily with bath towels. I just pause the machine before it goes into a spin, and redistribute them.

Use a good, HE detergent. You only need about a teaspoon or two, depending on what you are washing.

Remember that the bottom plate goes on the machine with the curvy side "out", facing the floor.

Customer Service at Haier USA is a joke. They don't know what they are talking about, if pressed will admit to never having seen a Haier washer, and they are just plain stupid. If you really have an issue with your machine, harrass the Customer Service morons until they forward you to Technical. They will do this if you scream enough and make them cry.
