Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Haier HPAC7M Portable Air ConditionerCustomer Review: Haier quality? Poorly designed window exhaust kit troubles weak unit Summary: 1 Stars
The AC unit has a weak internal fan which limits the coverage throughout a reasonable sized room (300 sq. foot). The blades do not allow very much repositioning of the "cool" draft. Settings are limited to manual dials which provide vague adjustments of temperature and speed. Unit provides nearly as much heat via the duct tubing as it weakly "blows" out through the front grill.
Most disappointing was the exhaust fan. Our exhaust kit seems to be extremely cheaply made as well as poorly designed. The screws do not extend long enough to keep panels extended to cover tall windows. Duct tape is needed to keep the kit in place. Our panels became warped so badly in the window during the summer that they have needed to be replaced. The panels should be comprised of plastic that at least can survive a hot summer season even in Arizona! Haier only warrantees the exhaust kit for 3 months so delay on your part can cost you very dearly.
Customer Review: My favorite of the ones I have Summary: 5 Stars
Pros:
This unit is 7,000 BTUs, the smallest of any portable unit I've found. Perfect for when you need a portable unit, but don't want one powerful enough to cool an airplane hanger! (This would be a con, however, if you do need a more powerful model.)
This unit is also the least expensive portable unit I've found. A definite plus if you, like me, need several to cool all the rooms in your apartment but can't use a window unit due to bars on the window that don't pot-belly out.
The absolute best feature is self-evaporating feature that means you never have to empty a water container! I cannot stress this point enough! On my other units, I have the choice of having to constantly empty the small built-in water tank, or draining the water into a bucket that won't automatically shut off the AC when it's full (and thus risks overflowing onto the floor if I forget to empty it.) This Haier is the one I leave on overnight to keep my bedroom cool, so it's especially reassuring to know I won't wake up to a flooded apartment.
Cons:
The window kit isn't as good as the one that came with the other brand of portable AC I have. It requires more assembly and doesn't have very good directions, though I figured it out after only one mistake. (The grate will stay securely if you put the screws through the part that blocks the rest of the window and have them end in the grate, but not vice-versa.) There was also no foam included to create a secure seal in the window. I had enough left over from my other AC units, but you might have to buy some or improvise. Lastly, the part that blocks the rest of the window looks like it's supposed to be able to be screwed securely at the right width, but that doesn't work. If you need to force it to stay at the right width, you'll need to improvise.
When the end of the exhaust tube connects to the window kit, there are a couple of holes that I covered with duct tape. No biggie, easily fixed, but still a design flaw.
The last difficulty I had was with the exhaust tube. I was hoping to put it in the room where the bars are on the inside of the window instead of the outside, but the end of the tube was too big to fit. I'm going to have to use one of my other units that has a longer, narrower endpiece to fit through the bars. But unless your apartment's window bars are as odd as mine, this won't matter for you.
Overall:
I wish I'd gotten two of these and one of the other brand instead of vice-versa! And the only reason I prefer the other brand for one of my rooms is because of the aforementioned problem with fitting the exhaust tube's endpiece through the bars.
Customer Review: Nice Portable Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this model last month at Big lots. I must say it works rather well for it's size. The tubing is a pain to postition and it barely cools off a large room, but for my bed room is works great. I hope this helps.
Customer Review: Pretty much everything it promised Summary: 4 Stars
I would have given this 4 and a half stars if I could have. It's only a little noisier than a fan and has cooled down my bedroom considerably, even during the recent heat spell, there was an occasional night I had to turn it off because I got cold. While it is a heavy unit and you do have to wait 24 hours to turn it on if it has tipped, it's easy to move along a flat surface, even a carpeted one. I do not recommend moving it up or down stairs without help. It does take up a bit more space than it says since you have to leave room for the exhaust tube. It's only major problem is the exhaust port which does not want to stay in the window even with using duck tape. I have yet to figure out how to secure it well. But after a month of use I have never had a leak or had to empty anything. So I think it balances out.
