Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Haier XQJ50-31 Agitator 1-2/3-Cubic-Foot Portable Washer

Customer Review: Dented, crushed, adn missing parts!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Although Amazon was not hesitant to give me my money back, I was upset that after my first shipment was replaced , the second also came severely damaged. The front was scrayched and the bottom had obviously been dropped or bumped. Also, it was missing two casters.I really would have loved the machine if it had come undamaged.....But it seems that it was just not possible. Then I asked Amazon to please send me another and they refused.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

We are disappointed with this washing machine.

One of the bottom corners was bent when we received the machine and the supplied water pipes leak water. The user has to install a panel at the bottom of the machine to seal off the noise from the motor. The panel was poorly designed and when installed, leaves big gaps all around.

You supposedly could hook up this portable machine's hot and cold water pipes to any single faucet. But Haier was so stingy that it didn't even supply a $3 "Y" connector for doing this. This defeats the whole purpose of a "portable", which is the reason we bought it to supplement our full size machine in the first place.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I have ordered two portable washers in the last 45 days, both the same brand but from different suppliers. Both machines were damaged in shipping and unfortunately I still have not received a refund from the first order. I would not recommend the Haier brand of machine. The package it is shipped in is completely inadequate. This has been a complete disappointment and again I am without a washing machine and of course the money that has not been refunded as of yet.

Customer Review: Don't get this washing machine
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had this for 1 1/2 years, and the whole time I wished that I had spent more to get a decent machine.... It makes a lot of noise, and now it will not work. I get an Error #2 which means that the door is not closed properly, yet it is closed properly. After further examination I have discovered that the circuit board for the unit is faulty. The replacement price for the board: $338!!! How is it that they can get away with charging $40 more for the circuit board than the entire unit cost originally? And, Haier technical support leaves something to be desired. You call in a problem and speak to someone who opens up a pdf of the product manual. If they can't figure it out, they take your phone number and say someone from techical support will call you "in about 2 business days. I should have rated this product 1 star....

Customer Review: Don't go the Laundromat again, buy this machine instead
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a family of four, 2 adults and 2 children, and was very, very tired of lugging laundry up and down stairs and then to a Laundromat. I read the reviews here and decided to give it a go, although I was concerned about shipping damage.

Ordered it, and it was Delivered on time. Good start. It was brought up the stairs for me by the delivery person which was an even better start.

Opened it up and did find something to worry about, a decent sized dent in the left/rear of the machine. Contacted Amazon and they told me it shouldn't affect the working of it, and they even took some off the price for the damage. Some of the reviews have stated they had dings "outwards" from the tub swinging freely during shipping, but I did not. I don't know if the manufacturer changed their packaging, but mine came firmly packaged and the inner tub was supported on the underside with a foam bracket and also inside the lid with a piece of foam between the lid and tub which held it firmly in place. My dent looked like someone had hit the box with a fork lift or large dolly perhaps.

Putting it together:
Ok, here is where I find what most have found. The instructions are lacking. Actually that isn't entirely accurate. The instructions are lacking, and in the wrong order. They tell you to put on the bottom vibration plastic part first, then remove the stationary legs (if you desire to) and put on the castors. Well first off my bottom plastic plate/part thing didn't fit 100% because of the dent in the machine. It did fit well enough though to get it on though so I was ok with that. However, when I go to remove the legs, I was able to remove one of the front ones fine, then the second one came off and I heard something clank inside the machine. Well the rear legs would not come off at all so I decided to remove the bottom plate and look for what made that noise I heard. There it was, a nut. It was holding on one of the front legs. So I look at the rear legs, and yes those are very securely fastened with a nut as well. This is most likely why people cannot remove the rear legs on their machines. What you need to do is take off the legs FIRST, checking for and removing the nuts, then the legs all come off fairly easily. The front two twist right off, the back too you will need a screwdriver for as they are held on by screw type bolts. Doing this I was able to easily install all 4 castors, and the replace the bottom plastic plate (which was now my 2nd time doing so as the instructions said to do it first).
When placing the hoses on the only advice I would give is to make sure everything is correctly tightened. Don't over tighten as that will cause problems, but do make sure they are all nice and tight. They go on easily the only problem I had with a hose was where it met the faucet, as I didn't have it tightened well enough onto the quick release ring.

Using the machine:
The instructions are more than adequate here so I'm not going to go into to much detail, however I will say one important thing. BALANCE your loads correctly. This machine is fairly generous in that it will take a bit to unbalance it to the point that it won't function (it turns off and shows you an error message). However, by carefully balancing your loads your machine will be much, MUCH quieter. This is already a pretty quiet machine, even while spinning (which is by far it's loudest action). The more balanced your load is, the quieter it is. Overflow/spillage/leaking. I have had this produce water on my floor 2 times. Neither time was very much water, and it was my own fault it happened. With any washer you should be careful to not overload the machine, but this is especially true with a portable one. I put to much in, selected the highest water level, and while it was agitating some water sloshed over the bin and down the sides(internally), which then lead to the bottom plate collecting the water, and then my floor will because it comes out of holes in this plate. It didn't come out of the top of the machine or anything like that, simply over the internal tub and then to the bottom. So now I'm more careful with how many clothes I put in and everything is fine.

Performance:
I have severe allergies and this machine gets my clothing very, very clean. It thoroughly rinses them and then it thoroughly spins them as well. They come out far more dry than I could have ever hoped for and far more dry than the local Laundromat's machines. It has two lint filters which both collect lint (a nice feature). It also has many different cycles available for you to choose from, with different options for each cycle. There is even a spin only, if you feel your clothes need to be wrung out a little more. This thing will out perform your expectations, to be sure. Also with the 4 castors on (which do lock firmly) this thing glides over tile. It's very easy to move about.

Overall:
The fact that nearly everyone gets one damaged does weigh on me, as mine did come with the good sized dent. However I blame this on the person(s) at the factory who move them around, or the shipper moving them around. The packaging inside was fairly robust and with proper care it would have come un-dented I'm sure. So cosmetically I'd give it a 4(however without the dent I think it is a fine looking machine worthy of a 5). Performance wise I'd give this beauty a 5 no doubt (even with the assembly instructions). Just remember my 3 important tips. Take off the legs FIRST, and then attach the bottom vibration plastic plate. Make sure to balance your loads. Finally, don't over fill the washer. You will get the hang of it very quickly, and you'll have this washer performing great and loving every minute of it in just a few loads.

I'm finally free from the Laundromat lugging, and you can be too with this great washer.
